Computers are great at many things - sorting long lists, computing averages of sales, giving us thousands of new and interesting ways to waste time every day - but sometimes they have a lot of trouble with some of the simpler ones. Like figuring out if two things on your screen are aligned, or are the same height or width.

And, no, our graphics programs don't always do that. In fact, they hardly ever do that, at least not how we want them to. We just want to know if the leftmost bits line up, or if the boxes in the page start and stop on the same lines.

So we were pretty happy when we found Screen Calipers. Not only does it measure anything on our screen, but does it without hiding what's underneath. So we know our measurements are exact and perfect.

Who Needs Screen Calipers?
You do if you've ever:

Tried using a piece of paper to see if two things on your screen were aligned.
Tried using a real ruler to measure something on your screen.
Tried using another window to see if two things on your screen were the same width or height (and been frustrated when it covers up what you're trying to measure).
Wanted more accuracy than you could get with an onscreen ruler.
Pasted a screenshot into your graphics tool just so you could enlarge it and be sure your objects lined up correctly.

I use the program to align pictures on my site and to measure blank space on my site to make sure my pages always stay centered like I want them. This is shareware but can be used indefinitely for free with just a nag screen and a couple of disabled features. I still use 2.1 even though 2.2 is out. I just don't need the couple of new feature changes in 2.2. If you pay for the program you will get to use the custom tools and turn off the splash screen along with other measure types including a measure that will tell you how large an image will print from your printer. I like the free stuff and this is only one of 2 programs I have ever paid for that I did not have to. The other one was only 2.00. Every person with a website should have this one.
